The short answer

Book as early as practical and describe the passenger, wheelchair or mobility aid precisely. Ask the operator to confirm the actual vehicle, boarding method, securement, assistance and total fare—not only that the trip is accepted.

Checklist before you ride

  1. Wheelchair dimensions and transfer needs supplied
  2. Ramp or lift and securement confirmed
  3. Companions and luggage declared
  4. Accessible meeting point agreed
  5. Fare and assistance charges checked

Understand the decision

01

Describe the requirement

State whether the passenger transfers to a seat or remains in the wheelchair. Give chair dimensions, total occupied weight when requested, folding ability, mobility aids, companion count and luggage.

02

Confirm the vehicle and help

Ask about ramp or lift, door opening, interior height, securement points and available assistance. “Accessible” can refer to different capabilities; request written confirmation of the points that matter.

03

Build a resilient pickup

Choose a step-free meeting point with room for the ramp or lift. Share a contact method, allow extra boarding time and keep an alternative operator or public transport option.

Common questions

Does “wheelchair accessible” always mean I can remain seated in my chair?

No. Vehicle capabilities and local definitions differ. Confirm that the exact chair can board and be secured with the passenger remaining in it.

Should assistance cost extra?

That depends on local law, and some jurisdictions prohibit extra charges for required disability assistance. Ask the authority or licensed operator before travel.
